Hottest Holiday Destinations - Christmas Getaway Ideas

Whether you enjoy a more traditional holiday, or are more apt to want to experience something completely new and different, you certainly don't have to stay home.

For many people, the holidays are a wonderful time to get away from it all. Everyone has time off of work, the kids are out of school and oftentimes, and there are few professional or social commitments to keep you home between Christmas and New Years. So why not consider packing your bags and heading on a Christmas Getaway.

The trick to not feeling cheated out of your holidays is to plan a holiday celebration that everyone will enjoy. First, sit down with your family and discuss the things that they each feel makes the holidays special. Then try and incorporate those traditions into your getaway. Can't imagine Christmas without snow? Then stay away from a Caribbean cruise! The holidays can be very personal (especially to children), so be careful not foster disappointment with your plans.

Or maybe you live in a warm urban climate and have always dreamed of celebrating a real down to earth Christmas,. Why not consider renting a country cottage in the country full of hometown Christmas festivities? Enjoy the town Christmas tree lighting ceremony, ice skating a the local pond; cutting down your own Christmas tree from the forest (or at least a tree farm); visiting Santa's cottage and having your family's picture taken; or drinking hot chocolate near an open fire on Christmas Eve night.

Going away for Christmas doesn't have to entail a holiday filled with sightseeing and travel. It can be a wonderful time to sit back, out up your feet and enjoy a holiday filled with relaxation and old-fashioned fun.

When considering where to go this holiday season ask yourself these important questions:

-Is our family looking for a traditional holiday experience or something totally off the wall and unconventional?

-Are we looking for a warm weather or cold weather holiday getaway?

-Do we want to relax or be on-the-go?

-Will our getaway include our immediate family only, or extended family and friends?

-Are we interested in a down to earth holiday experience, or something that includes a more modern touch?

Once you've decided the type of Christmas getaway you're after, it's time to consider where to get it. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

-If you're looking for a tradicional Christmas, consider a visit to New England, where the weather is often cold and snowy (great for skiing, ice skating and sledding), and the lifestyle is slower. If a hotel seems too impersonal, consider a bed and breakfast facility that features tree decorating, Christmas caroling and a formal Christmas Dinner.

Other options may include a visitor's house that welcomes people into their home to share the holidays. Some other great places to enjoy a more traditional Christmas experience include: a Midwest farm; Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; or a more rural area of the Pacific Northwest.

-Those who crave a less traditional Christmas getaway may enjoy a European vacation; Caribbean cruise; trip to Disney World in Florida; or even a train ride through the glaciers of Alaska.

With so many choices available, it really doesn't matter where you decide to spend your holidays this year. The important thing to remember is to incorporate the things that your family wants and needs to have in order to make it a memorable Christmas this year.

How to Celebrate a Danish Christmas

Every country has its own way of celebrating the Christmas season, and Denmark is no exception. To quote Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish Christmas is "magnificent, quite unforgettably magnificent". Most Danes go all out when it comes to planning and celebrating Christmas, or Jul.

Below are a few things you should do to celebrate a true "Danish" Christmas .

The four Sundays preceding Christmas are called Advent Sundays, and it is traditional to create a wreath that contains four candles (Adventkrans). The first of the four Advent wreath candles is lit on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. On the following Sundays an additional candle is lit. So on the second Sunday, two candles are lit. On the Sunday before Christmas, all four candles should be lit.

On December 1st, it is customary for children to light a tall calendar candle , which has the 24 days of Christmas printed at intervals along the candle. Each day the children burn one of the 24 sections that mark the number of days until Christmas.

Another tradition is the Advent calendar. There are various forms of these. Some are fancy cardboard houses, which have a door/window for each of the 24 days before Christmas. Each day children open a door to find a surprise or small gift.

Some families may use a tapestry with small gifts hanging from 24 hooks, and each day children are allowed to open a small gift. Depending on the family, some may use one, two or all of the above at the same time.

Decorations are a major part of having Christmas, and the Danes take this part of Christmas very seriously. Below are a few things you should do to celebrate a true "Danish" Christmas..

As for the Christmas tree, many families like to choose and chop down their own tree - there are many ads in the newspapers about places where you can go to do just that.

Unlike in America, the tree is usually not put up until Little Christmas Eve (December 23) or Christmas Eve. Some people will have their trees standing outside the home until that time.

Homes are also decorated with lights and candles; many of the "lighting traditions" of America are now taking hold in some Danish homes. In some places, you can now see large lawn displays and houses lit up with hundreds of lights.

A more traditional form of decoration starts early in the month of December, when the house is decorated with "nisse", garland, candles, tinsel and mobiles. Later in the month, families may enjoy a favorite pre-Christmas activity, a "cut-and-paste" afternoon, where friends arrive with colored paper, scissors and glue to make traditional cones, angels, birds, baskets and hearts for the tree.

These are items that will be hung on the tree and often filled with sweets, nuts and other assorted edibles. After all the activity, there will be something good to eat!

Paris - A Versailles Travel Destination Makes a Wonderful Holiday Trip

Versailles in Paris is one of the most popular attractions in France. It is a beautiful place with remarkable architecture, beautiful interiors and stunning landscaped gardens. Not surprising, many tourists around the world want to embark on a Versailles tour to see for themselves the beauty and grandeur of the famous Versailles palace.

The château de Versailles symbolised the great power of the French monarchy. It was built in 1624 as a hunting lodge for Louis XIII. Later, it was developed by Louis XIV and became the largest palace in Europe. For the development of this project, Louis XIV had engaged architects Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart, painter Charles Le Brun and landscaper André Le Nôtre. By 1774, after alterations by Louis XV and XVI, it became a grand and huge place, housing more than 10,000 courtiers and servants.

The Versailles palace possesses a stunning combination of wonderful paintings, special mirrors, exclusive fabrics and fantastic interiors. The main highlights of the château are the King's State Bedroom, Queen's Bedroom, Hall of Mirrors and Chapelle Royale. The main apartments are located on the first floor of the château. The first floor of the Chapelle Royale was reserved for use by the royal family whilst the ground floor by the court. The interior of the Chapelle Royalle are beautifully decorated. Great state occasions used to be held in the Hall of Mirrors, which is a magnificent multi-mirrored room, with a length of about 73m.

Apart from the château, there are the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, Hameau de la Reine (Queen's Hamlet) and the vast gardens. The Grand Trianon at Versailles was built by Louis XIV in 1687. It is a small place for him to escape from the formal duties of the château and enjoy the company of his mistress, Madame de Maintenon. This building is made of stone and pink marble. The Petit Trianon, another building, was built in 1762 as a retreat for Louis XV. The Hameau de la Reine (Queen's Hamlet) was built at the request of Queen Marie-Antoinette, who wanted a refuge from the daily tasks of the chateau. It was a farm with orchards and fields which used to produce food for the royal table.

The vast gardens in Versailles span an area of approximately 8 sq km. The gardens are formed by structured patterns and consist of pathways, shrubberies, flowerbeds, pools and fountains. Furthermore, there are many beautiful statues which form part of the attractions of the gardens. These sculptures are being covered up during the winter months.

If you wish to explore thoroughly the historical and architectural heritage of the Versailles palace, you will need to spend more than a day in Versailles. On Saturdays and Sundays, during the period from April to September, you will be able to see the fountains dance according to music. An extra is fee charged to enter the gardens during this period. The Versailles palace is usually very crowded on Sundays.

Versailles is indeed a remarkable place with grand interiors, beautiful paintings and lovely gardens. You can find many fascinating highlights here. A Versailles tour is necessary to fully appreciate its beauty and grandeur. Without doubt, you will enjoy the wonderful insights this place offers.

Top Destinations For Christmas Breaks UK Style

Dartmoor

Another isolated yet beautiful spot is Dartmoor, in the heart of Devonshire. More likely than London to get snow around the festive season, it offer a great deal of places to explore with the family or with friends. Christmas breaks in the UK are also about socialising though, and you'll find plenty of friendly pubs to enjoy food and drink in (many of these are family friendly). If you want more action, you can always escape to Plymouth or Exeter for a more lively experience. But for those who want solitude and pretty English countryside, there are plenty cottages and holiday homes to stay in on Dartmoor.

Christmas breaks, UK style are arguably better enjoyed when you seek out more traditional locations and quaint pubs and villages. A little planning can make a festive getaway extra special. If you go to one of the more remote places, it's a good idea to make a backup plan for if the solitude gets too much - i.e. find out where the nearest pub is!

Top Destinations For Christmas Breaks UK Style

London

The British capital is often well visited because of the vast Christmas lights that go up along its key shopping thoroughfares. Regents Street is a prime example - the lights of which are turned on by a famous person annually. It is true that snow is quite uncommon in London, but last year it broke with this tradition, and the city has more than a dusting of snow in the winter months. The city is certainly an option for those looking for Christmas breaks, UK style.

The Isle Of Skye

Quite possibly the antithesis of old London town, the isle of Skye offers what many people describe as some of the finest coastal and mountain landscapes in Britain. If you choose to come here, you should be aware of the isolated nature of the place; ideal if you have been in a built up area for awhile and need to escape with friends or family. Beaches and wildlife make it a real option for Christmas breaks. UK escapes don't get more dramatic than this.

Walt Disney World Holidays - Celebrating the Christmas Season

Walt Disney World Holidays - Celebrating the Christmas Season With ...

If you have plans to travel to Walt Disney World during the Christmas holiday season, congratulations! You will be visiting during one of the most magical times of the year, even for Disney. My family and I have been fortunate to celebrate a few Walt Disney World holidays in years past, so this article will discuss a few of our family's favorite things to see and do during the Disney Christmas season.

Let's start with the Magic Kingdom. You will find Cinderella's Castle decked out in breathtaking "icicle" lights each night. Be sure to get pictures: if you are like me and not great with taking night-time pictures, then get a few PhotoPass shots in front of the castle. Trust me you'll be glad you did!

Magic Kingdom also hosts Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party on a number of nights in December, prior to Christmas. This is a separate ticket, so if you want to attend, you will need to purchase tickets separately from your park pass. One of the highlights is the Christmas parade, featuring the famous Wooden Soldiers. If you want to see the parade, but don't plan on going to the Party before Christmas, you will be able to see it daily, every afternoon, typically starting Christmas Day...no separate ticket needed! (Please note: The Walt Disney World Christmas Parade that you see on TV every year on Christmas morning is not a live event and is, in fact, taped weeks before. So do not go to the Magic Kingdom on Christmas morning expecting to see/be in the parade!)

What about Epcot? While the decorations are beautiful, World Showcase offers a number of wonderful programs related to the "Holidays Around the World" theme, and if you have ever wondered what it would be like to celebrate Christmas in another country, here is your chance. Each country presents their favorite holiday traditions, and many have Holiday Storytellers that highlight some very interesting and fun customs: don't be surprised to see Father Christmas in England, Pere Noel in France, and St. Nicholas in Germany to name a few. It is delightful and yes, educational, in a very fun way.

Probably the highlight of the Wald Disney World holidays in Epcot is the Candlelight Processional, a nightly presentation of the Christmas story with a celebrity guest narrator and a huge massed choir made up of professional, college, and high school choirs from around the country. Although there are 3 showings each night, the line for seats starts well in advance of each show. You can reserve a seat by purchasing a Candlelight Processional dinner package, and I highly recommend. If you don't want to do the dinner package, then assign someone in your group to wait in the stand-by line to be certain of getting a seat. This is a dramatic and powerful performance that is always the highlight of our Disney Christmas visits.

Disney's Hollywood Studios has their fair share of holiday entertainment with the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, held nightly on the Streets of America. There are literally millions of lights in this display and it is truly an amazing one. The streets can get very crowded however, during this busy season, so to get the most of your visit here, go during the nightly Fantasmic show, or at the end of the evening, before the park closes. It is much more enjoyable when you are not elbow to elbow with people!

If you still want more parades, then Animal Kingdom has Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade, with all the characters in their holiday finest. Downtown Disney has the Festival of the Seasons, where you can finish any holiday shopping, visit Santa before Dec. 24, and say hi to Santa Goofy from Dec. 25 to Jan. 4. And don't miss visiting the holiday decorations at the Disney resorts as well. On your list should be the Grand Floridian for the Gingerbread House, the Boardwalk for the Carousel, and the Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge for the enormous trees. These should not be missed, plus they are great ways to get away from the crowds for a bit.

The Walt Disney World holidays are certainly one of the loveliest times of year to visit. With beautiful holiday decorations and a festive atmosphere, Disney World becomes even more magical than it usually is.
